Tata Mumbai Marathon celebrates 100 years of the iconic Marine Drive Sea Face Aditya Thackeray & Tiger Shroff hold aloft the event trophy to mark the felicitation
As we countdown to the most-awaited race day, the Tata Mumbai Marathon, a symbol of pride for its host city, today celebrated yet another supreme landmark of the Maximum City. Mumbai’s majestic boulevard Marine Drive marks a momentous 100 years since its sea face was constructed and completed in 1920.
It is difficult to imagine the Tata Mumbai Marathon without Marine Drive. For the past 17 years, on the third Sunday of January, the Marine Drive boulevard has opened its heart to thousands of runners. For the Tata Mumbai Marathon, it is a privilege to be a part of this momentous celebration, marking 100 years.
Every participant, thousands of spectators and millions more thru the live telecast, will this year celebrate the iconic Queen’s Necklace, which holds a memory, a story and a special place in each person's heart.
In a fitting tribute to mark the moment, Aaditya Thackeray, newly-elected Minister of Tourism, Environment & Protocol, Government of Maharashtra, along with title sponsors Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian, Tata Sons; Ujjwal Mathur, VP & Country Head, Tata Consultancy Services and Face of the event, Tiger Shroff, held aloft the event trophy, as a symbolic salute to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Mumbai’s rich cluster of Victorian and Art Deco buildings in the Fort precinct and Marine Drive was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2018. With this recognition, Maharashtra now has five such sites, with three in Mumbai itself, helping it position itself on the global map of such financial and cultural destinations. Popularly called the Queen’s Necklace, the crescent-shaped bay off the Arabian Sea has been seen across photographs, movies, advertisements, and posters in these last 100 years; making it one of the most loved and easily recognizable boulevards amongst cities in India.
Aditya Thackeray, Minister, Government of Maharashtra and an MLA from Mumbai added, “It’s a moment of pride for all of us Mumbaikars, as we celebrate 100 years of the iconic Mumbai Marine Drive Sea face. It is an iconic symbol of the city’s rich cultural heritage. Today’s felicitation is a fitting tribute to the legacy of these two icons. Seeing the stupendous growth of the Tata Mumbai Marathon, it is befitting that this wonderful event, is fully supported by the Government of Maharashtra.
Tiger Shroff, the face of the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2020, said, “The city of Mumbai has such a rich history, it is unbelievable. I was born and brought up in this wonderful city; that the iconic Marine Drive is all of 100 years old is totally praise-worthy! We’ve enjoyed its beauty in various ways in our growing up years. I’ve experienced the thrill of running on this stretch many years ago as a youngster participating in the Dream Run. To be present here today to mark this momentous occasion, is a humbling moment for me personally.”
The specially crafted Tata Mumbai Marathon trophy, designed by Paresh Maity, one of India’s most promising contemporary artists, is awarded to the overall men’s and women’s winners.
The Trophy encapsulates the energy and the heritage of Mumbai city. The human figure exuding confidence is not just the Marathon runner but the everyday Mumbaikar, whose journey takes him across the seven islands of the city. The symbolic seven islands are also shown as spaces in the human body. Standing on seven pillars of different lengths, the runner overcomes the seven emotional & physical stages to complete his race.
